Competitiveness in the flute studio

Food for thought:  As teachers, what do we know about competitiveness between flute students? What works about mimetic envy? What doesn't work because of competitiveness? How can a competitive student re-cycle that energy into a positive outcome?  And this from Jenifer Cluff: "Many more local festivals and competitions are changing to "non-competitive" in Canada. The students receive judges comments and advice, but marking systems and recommendations for advancement are not announced publicly during the actual competition. How is this working to keep the goodness of competitions while eliminating the stress?"
