(Used at University of Wyoming, Dr. Nicole Riner)
All first- and second-year students must pass a scale test each semester to move on to the next semester of work (number of points required to pass each semester is listed with that semester's work). Students will be required to perform the following from memory, all in sixteenth notes (triplets for the arpeggios):
Level 1 (30 points to pass)
A chromatic scale, beginning on any note, extended*
All major and harmonic minor scales, extended
All major and minor arpeggios
Level 2 (48 points to pass)
A chromatic scale, beginning on any note, extended
All major, melodic and harmonic minor scales, extended
All major, minor, and augmented arpeggios, extended
A whole tone scale, beginning on any note, extended
Level 3 (120 points to pass)
A chromatic scale, beginning on any note, extended
All major, melodic and harmonic minor scales, extended
All major, minor, and augmented arpeggios, extended
A whole tone scale, beginning on any note, extended
All dominant seventh chords, extended
All fully diminished seventh chords, extended
Level 4: (196 point to pass)
A chromatic scale, beginning on any note, extended
All major, melodic and harmonic minor scales, extended
All major, minor, and augmented arpeggios, extended

*Extended=begin on the tonic, play to D4 (or C#, depending on the key), down to low B (or C#, depending on the key), and back to the tonic.
**Additionally, all aforementioned patterns should be practiced on all of the articulations found in Taffanel-Gaubert, 17 Daily Exercises, exercise #4, except arpeggios, which may be slurred Students will be asked to perform specific articulations on each scale or chord for their tests.
Students will be awarded points for every scale, arpeggio, and chord which is accurately performed. A successful performance of any given item involves correctness of notes and articulation patterns, cleanliness of sound, and evenness of fingers and tongue. Points will be assigned as follows:
quarter note=60: 1 points
quarter note=66: 2 points
quarter note=69: 3 points
quarter note=72: 4 points
quarter note=76: 5 points
quarter note=80: 6 points
quarter note=84: 7 points
quarter note=88: 8 points
quarter note=92: 9 points
quarter note=96: 10 points
quarter note=100: 11 points
quarter note=104: 12 points
Each student should work weekly with the teaching assistant on these patterns to ensure success on the scale portion of their juries. If either teaching assistant or scale student feels this need is not being met, please consult with Dr. Riner immediately.
